How do I check if my tax card’s income ceiling is high enough?

I have not made changes to my tax card during the year

  • Go to MyTax and open the prepayment decision you received in December 2022. Go to the Communication tab and then click the Open decisions and letters link under Decisions and letters.
  • The prepayment decision includes the amount of income you are estimated to receive during the year. The withholding rate on your tax card is based on this estimate.
  • If the estimate is high enough to cover your income for the entire year, the payor will use your basic tax rate.
  • If the estimate is too low, go to Tax card and prepayments and select Request a new tax card.
  • If you do not change your tax card, the payor will withhold tax on the income that exceeds the income ceiling at the end of the year according to your additional withholding rate.
  • If you want to avoid paying back taxes, use the tax rate calculator to estimate whether you need to change your tax rate. Request a new tax card in MyTax, if necessary.
  • If you have multiple employers, you must keep track of your income ceiling by yourself. If necessary, request a new tax card or make an additional prepayment. This way, you can avoid paying back taxes.

Please note: The withholding rate on your 2023 tax card will also be used in January 2024. However, the calculation of your income restarts from zero at the beginning of the year. Your 2024 tax card will be taken into use on 1 February 2024.

I have made changes to my tax card during the year

  • Go to MyTax and check the income ceiling in the section Tax card and prepayments.
  • If the income ceiling seems high enough, you do not have to do anything.
  • If you think the income ceiling is too low for the rest of the year, select Tax cards and prepayments and then Request a new tax card. By changing your tax rate for this year you can avoid paying back taxes next year.
  • If you do not request a new tax card, the payor will withhold tax on the income that exceeds the income ceiling according to your additional withholding rate.
  • If you have multiple employers, you must keep track of your income ceiling by yourself. If necessary, request a new tax card or make an additional prepayment. This way, you can avoid paying back taxes.
