Data security and the processing of personal data at the Finnish Tax Administration

The Tax Administration collects taxes and fees, exercises control over taxation, handles payments and recovery of unpaid taxes and enforces the legal rights of tax recipients. In addition, the Tax Administration is expected to promote fairness and uniformity of taxation and to improve the services offered to taxpayers.

The Tax Administration needs information in order to assess taxpayers’ taxes, and it also collects, saves and processes personal data for this purpose, abiding by the provisions of the tax legislation including the Income Tax Act, Act on the taxation of real estate property, Inheritance and Gift Tax Act, and the acts governing VAT, excise duties and car taxes.

The Finnish Tax Administration is a ‘controller’ within the meaning of EU Regulation 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation).
