Tax card for a summer job

If you receive wages, you always need a tax card. If you do not have a tax card, your employer must withhold 60% of your wages as taxes. In comparison, the tax rate in your tax card for wages is usually 0% if you earn less than €10,000 a year. Note that your employer needs your tax card information even if your tax rate is 0%.

Ask your supervisor at the summer job how you should deliver your tax card details. Some employers receive tax card details directly from the Tax Administration, whereas others expect you to present your tax card to them yourself. Your employer will let you know what to do. Note that the employer will need your tax card well in advance before the first payday.

In addition to taxes, the employer will withhold insurance contributions from your wages.

Where can I get a tax card?

  • At the beginning of each year, we send a tax card by post to everyone aged 15 or over. In addition, persons younger that that also receive a card if our records show that they have been paid wages previously. You can use the tax card you received by post. You can also scan the tax card or take a photo of it.
  • You can also find your valid tax card in MyTax. Log in to MyTax with your personal online banking codes or a mobile certificate. If you are under 18, your guardian can use MyTax on your behalf. See the instructions: How to find your tax card for wages in MyTax.

Student housing supplement and students’ financial aid on your tax card

A housing supplement for students or housing allowance is a tax-exempt benefit. This means that it is not subject to tax, so it does not affect your tax card’s income ceiling or tax rate.

Financial aid for students includes a study grant paid for the months during which you are entitled to the aid and a government guarantee for the student loan, for example.

The study grant is taxable income and can affect your tax card’s withholding rate.

If you want to make changes to your tax card, you will need an estimate of the study grant amount you receive during the year.

See the MyTax instructions for ordering a tax card:

You do not need a tax card for just a study grant, but if you also have work income, the study grant affects your tax rate.

Please note: If you receive a study grant for adults, do not enter it in section Study grant but in section Benefits.

Getting started

  • Go to MyTax (opens in a new window)
  • On the MyTax home page, go to Tax card and prepayments 2026 and select Tax cards and prepayments.
  • Select Request a new tax card.
  • Click Select the short tax card request.

The request has 6 stages.

Stage 1: Background

Check that the information is correct.

Click Next to proceed to the next stage.

Stage 2: Pre-completed income and deductions

In this stage, you can see the details on which your current tax card is based. Check the information and make changes, if necessary.

If you do not have a valid tax card for wages, you can get a tax card for wage income by proceeding to the next page and the Other income stage.

Stage 3: Other income

Go to Pay and fringe benefits

  • Report the pay you have received since the start of the year, and the tax that has been withheld on it.  If you have not received any wages since the start of the year, leave the section empty.
  • Enter an estimate of your wage income for the entire year (12 months, from January to December).

Instructions for estimating your pay.

Please note that if your employer has reported your earnings payment data to the Incomes Register, you can see it in the Pre-completed income and deductions stage. Proceed to the Pre-completed income and deductions stage if you want to report earnings payment data.

In section Study grant, select Yes. Report the amount of study grant you receive each month. Enter the gross amount per month, i.e. do not subtract any taxes withheld.

Please note: A housing supplement and a student loan are not reported for the tax card. They are not taxable income.

Usually, Kela does not withhold tax from the study grant, so you select No. If you have provided Kela with a tax card for study grant, select Yes and estimate the amount of withholdings for the entire year (1 January to 31 December).

Stage 4: Other deductions

  • In this stage, you can report any commuting expenses, trade-union membership fees, or other such expenses.
  • If you want to claim other deductions, such as credit for household expenses, go to the complete version of the request.

Stage 5: Delivery method

  • Check the tax card’s validity period and delivery method.
  • MyTax suggests the current day as the start date, and usually it does not need to be changed.

If you receive your tax mail on paper, select a delivery method for tax card. This selection is not shown if you receive your tax mail electronically in MyTax only.

Stage 6: Preview and send – Your tax card is ready

In the Preview and send stage, you can see the details on which your tax card is based, as well as your tax rate (withholding rate) indicated in the tax card.

  • Check that the information is correct. Click Edit or Previous to make corrections.
  • If you wish to continue filling in the details later, select Save as unfinished. Data saved as unfinished will be stored for a month. The Tax Administration will not process the information before you have submitted it.
  • Once all the details are correct, select Submit. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt.

Read more about the study grant on Kela’s website.

The student loan is not subject to tax, so it does not affect the tax card’s income ceiling.

Change the tax card if needed

  • 1

You will always receive a new tax card at the turn of the year

The tax rate indicated in the tax card shows how much tax you will pay on your wages. The tax card is valid for the entire year or until you request a new tax card.

  • 2

Change your tax rate if needed

If your income or deductions change, your tax rate may be too high or too low. In that case, you may want to change your tax card. You can change your tax card as many times as necessary.

  • 3

    Check your pre-completed tax return

At the end of the year, the Tax Administration collects your tax information from your tax card and other sources and prepares a pre-completed tax return for you. Check the tax return details and make any corrections needed.

  • 4

Final tax assessment: a tax refund or back taxes?

Based on your pre-completed tax return and the corrections you have made to it, the Tax Administration calculates the total amount of your taxes and charges. If your tax rate has been too high, it means that you have paid too much tax and will get a tax refund. If your tax rate has been too low, you will have to pay back taxes.

Submit your bank account number

Submit your bank account number in MyTax. The account number will be needed if you receive a tax refund. See the instructions for submitting your bank account number.
