Car tax – instructions for payment

Pay the car tax before requesting registration in Finland.

If you pay via the online service for car tax

If you pay via the online service for car tax, the Tax Administration sends an automated message of authorisation to the Traffic Safety Agency as soon as the payment has arrived. The online service for car tax will accept your payment up to its due date.

Internet Explorer has a technical error

At the present time, version 11 of the Internet Explorer browser software does not support the electronic payment of car tax. To make an online payment, use another browser.

If you pay via your personal e-bank

If you log in to your e-bank to pay the tax, it will take longer to send the message to the Traffic Safety Agency that authorises registration. The payment will not be visible in the Tax Administration’s IT system until after 1 to 3 days. However, as soon as the payment has arrived, the Tax Administration will send the message of authorisation to the Traffic Safety Agency automatically.

Did you pay after the due date?

Please note:

Your temporary right to operate the vehicle in Finland is no longer in force when the due date of your car tax has passed.

The online service for car tax (autoveroilmoituspalvelu, e-tjänsten för bilskattedeklaration) does not accept payments after due date.

If you pay past due date, you must add late-payment interest. Please contact the Tax Administration’s service number 029 497 150 (car taxation, limited service in English, standard call rates).

If you pay after the due date, you must enter the payment data printed on the enclosure of the decision letter that you received. The payment will not be visible in the Tax Administration’s IT system until after 1 to 3 days. For this reason, it takes longer than with online payments to send the message to the Traffic Safety Agency that authorises registration.

Need an extension for your payment of car tax?

If you have financial difficulties, you can be given some extra time for making the payment if special circumstances apply. However, after the due date of the car tax, even if you are given the extra time, the vehicle still cannot be operated on the road.
