Car tax – instructions for payment
Pay the car tax before requesting registration in Finland.
If you pay via the online service for car tax
If you pay via the online service for car tax, the Tax Administration sends an automated message of authorisation to the Traffic Safety Agency as soon as the payment has arrived. The online service for car tax will accept your payment up to its due date.
If you send your payment in this e-service and an error message appears, your payment will still be transferred to the Tax Administration after 1 to 3 days. The Finnish Transport and Comminications Agency (Traficom) will receive permission for vehicle registration when the payment has arrived in the Tax Administration’s account.
If there is an error in the e-service, make sure that the payment has not been debited from your bank account before you make the online payment again. If you accidentally pay too much, you will receive your excess payment back in a week.
If you pay via your personal e-bank
If you log in to your e-bank to pay the tax, it will take longer to send the message to the Finnish Transport and Comminications Agency (Traficom) that authorises registration. The payment will not be visible in the Tax Administration’s IT system until after 1 to 3 days. However, as soon as the payment has arrived, the Tax Administration will send the message of authorisation to the Finnish Transport and Comminications Agency (Traficom) automatically.
Make sure you pay with the correct account number and reference number. The decision on car tax that you received contains a bank form. Use the bank account and reference numbers printed on it.
Did you pay after the due date?
Your temporary right to operate the vehicle in Finland is no longer in force when the due date of your car tax has passed.
The online service for car tax (autoveroilmoituspalvelu, e-tjänsten för bilskattedeklaration) does not accept payments after due date.
If you pay after the due date, you must add late-payment interest to the tax. To find out how much interest you should add, use the interest rate calculator (in Finnish and Swedish only); select the type “Other taxes" (“Muut verot”). When you pay, enter the payment data printed on the enclosure of the decision letter that you received.
The payment will not be visible in the Tax Administration’s IT system until after 1 to 3 days. For this reason, it takes longer than with online payments to send the message to the Finnish Transport and Comminications Agency (Traficom) that authorises registration.
Need an extension for your payment of car tax?
If you have financial difficulties, you can be given some extra time for making the payment if special circumstances apply. However, after the due date of the car tax, even if you are given the extra time, the vehicle still cannot be operated on the road.
