I received an erroneous letter – what should I do?

The Tax Administration sent out 2,836 erroneous letters. They were dated 6 August.

We will send new letters to all taxpayers who received a letter dated 6 August. Most of the letters dated 6 August are not erroneous. However, as a precaution, we will send them again as well.

The erroneous letters contained details of other taxpayers, such as

  • information of their spouses
  • bank account numbers
  • tables with for example tax decision details, text and figures.
  • QR codes that do not contain details of other taxpayers.

A setting in the source code of the tax letter printing system caused the erroneous letters. The cause of the error was discovered, and no more erroneous letters will be sent.

The erroneuos letters were dated 6 August. In most cases, the erroneous letters look confusing, because there may be overlapping texts, for example. The same letter may also contain text in both Finnish and Swedish.

You do not need to contact the Tax Administration if you received an erroneous letter. We will send a new letter to everyone who received an erroneous letter. You can find your tax decision in MyTax as well.

We are currently working on finding out whose identifiable details were transferred to the erroneous letters. If you received a letter dated 6 August, it is possible that your details were transferred to an erroneous letter that another person or company received.

We will send you a letter if your identifiable details were transferred to someone else’s letter. We will send a letter to all taxpayers whose identifiable details were in the erroneous letters. The General Data Protection Regulation requires that we must inform everyone who were affected by the data protection offence.

Destroy the letter in a safe way so that the details are unreadable. The erroneous letters should be destroyed for data security reasons. Neither the Tax Administration nor a third party needs them.

The Suomi.fi message is sent from MyTax where your tax decision is correct. The errors were only in letters sent by post.
