How do I pay car tax?
You can pay the car tax in your e-bank or in MyTax.
When you make the payment, use the reference number for car tax to make sure the payment is used for car tax.
After you have paid the car tax, you will receive a permission to register the vehicle.
Pay the car tax in your e-bank or in MyTax
Note: The bank account numbers and reference numbers for car tax changed at the beginning of February 2021.
If you use the old reference number for car tax after January, your payment may be delayed or even returned to you, and you will have to wait for the registration permission longer. If you pay car tax using the Tax Administration’s old bank account number, the payment may be returned to you the next day. In this case, your car tax remains unpaid and late-payment interest starts to accrue on the day following the due date.
If you pay the car tax in the e-bank, remember to use the payment details specified in the car tax decision. These include the bank account number, the reference number, the amount of car tax and the due date. Please note that the reference number is different for different taxpayers and different tax types, and only the correct reference number helps us to allocate the payment to the right tax.
When you pay the tax in MyTax, the reference numbers and other payment details are automatically included in your e-bank payment. If you pay in MyTax, the payment date is always the current day and it cannot be changed. You can pay the car tax when you receive your car tax decision in MyTax.
When you pay the tax in the e-bank or in MyTax, the payment may arrive in the Tax Administration’s bank account on the next work day or only after a few days.
When can I register my vehicle?
- Car tax returns must be filed in MyTax.
- When you receive a decision on car tax, you can pay the tax in your e-bank or in MyTax.
- After you have filed a car tax return in MyTax and paid the tax, you will receive a notification in MyTax within the next 1 or 2 days saying that you can register the vehicle.
If you are a registered filer of car tax, you do not need a registration permission to register a vehicle. Read more about filing car tax (available only in Finnish and Swedish).
Due dates of car tax
Check the due date and payment details of car tax in your car tax decision or in MyTax.
The due dates of car tax are determined as follows:
- New vehicles – main rule: The due date of car tax is the 24th day of the month following the car tax period. If the 24th day is not a banking day, the due date is the next banking day.
Example 1: Pay the car tax for February’s car tax period by 24 March.
- New vehicles – exception: If the Tax Administration makes a decision on car tax within 7 days before the normal due date or after that, the due date will be postponed.
Example 2: The Tax Administration makes a decision on a registered car tax filer’s car tax for April’s car tax period on 20 May. Because the decision was made during the 7-day period preceding the due date (24 May 2021), the due date will be postponed by one month. The new due date for the car tax is 24 June 2021.
If the due date is postponed because the registered car tax filer has filed the car tax return for the period after the due date, late payment interest will be imposed in the tax decision. The late payment interest will accrue from the day after the 24th of the month following the end of the car tax period up until the due date stated in the tax decision.
The due date for car tax is the 24th of the calendar month. The period between the decision and the due date is always at least 2 weeks. The due date is therefore the next 24th day after 14 days have passed from the date of the car tax decision.
Example 3: A car tax decision is made on 8 February 2021. On 22 February 2021, two weeks (14 days) have passed from the date of decision. The due date of the car tax imposed in the decision is 24 February 2021.
Example 4: A car tax decision is made on 12 February 2021. On 26 February 2021, two weeks (14 days) have passed from the date of decision. The due date of the car tax imposed in the decision is 24 March 2021.
If the due date is postponed because the taxpayer has filed the tax return after the due date, late-payment interest can be imposed in the tax decision.
