Tax percentage calculator: Do you need a new tax card? How to estimate if your tax rate is high enough
You can estimate whether your current tax rate is high enough and if you need a new tax card either in MyTax or with the tax rate calculator.
Estimate whether you need a new tax card in MyTax
When you estimate whether your tax rate is high enough in MyTax, act as if you were making a new tax card there. MyTax has a lot of information ready, which makes it easier for you to enter the details. If you decide to request a tax card with new details, you can just submit the information.
If you do not want to request a tax card with the new information, you can reject the changes or save the tax card details as unfinished. The details you have saved as unfinished are stored in MyTax for one month, so you can go back and request a new tax card with the information you entered, if necessary. Only a tax card request that has been submitted will enter into force.
Use the tax rate calculator
You can use the tax rate calculator to estimate whether your tax rate needs to be changed. You do not need to log in to MyTax to use the calculator.
Please note that the result generated by the tax rate calculator is only a rough estimate. The calculator shows you only the tax rate. In addition to taxes, your employer will withhold insurance contributions from your income.
Please note that the details you enter in the calculator will not be transferred directly to MyTax. If you want to request a new tax card, you must enter the details in MyTax separately.
Additional information about the calculator
You can use the tax rate calculator to estimate whether the tax rate indicated in your tax card needs to be changed. This may be necessary if you have started or stopped working, for example, and your income or deductions have changed significantly. The calculator helps you estimate the tax in common situations, for example when you receive
- wages
- benefits from Kela or unemployment funds
- a study grant
- seafarer’s income or
- a pension.
You can use the calculator even if you are insured under the act on pensions for self-employed persons (YEL) or the act on pensions for agricultural entrepreneurs (MYEL) and the income on the basis of which your health insurance contribution is calculated is therefore different from that of other income recipients. In such a case, the work income under YEL/MYEL replaces the earned income received from business operations. The health insurance contribution is calculated based on the work income and such other earned income that has not been replaced with work income.
You can also use the calculator in situations where you do not have to pay Finnish health insurance contributions on your income.
You cannot use the calculator to calculate the tax rate if you receive
- annual income from abroad
- athlete's fees
- employee stock options or
- seafarer's income in addition to income subject to prepayments or capital income other than pensions, dividends or surplus.
Further, the calculator cannot be used for
- income spreading
- periodisation of pensions
- handling of losses
- calculating the withholding rate of a non-resident pension recipient
- calculating the income of YEL-/MYEL-insured fishermen receiving seafarer's income from their own company.
