Tax refunds – individual taxpayers

If you have paid too much tax in withholding or prepayments, we refund the excess back to you when the tax year is over. Refunds are paid to taxpayers on different dates, depending on when their tax assessment process is completed. You can see the date and amount of your refund in MyTax and on the tax decision.

This guidance is for individual taxpayers and for the self-employed. Guidance on tax refunds paid to corporate entities is available here.

Refunds can be postponed or changed

If you or your spouse made changes to your tax returns, the refund date will be postponed. The refund amount may change as well. In addition, if some of your refund has been used to pay your other taxes or debts in enforcement, you may receive less refund. We will send you a new tax decision with the refund amount and date by the end of October.

You receive interest on your tax refund

The Tax Administration pays credit interest on refunds. The interest is not shown on your tax decision. The Tax Administration will add the interest to your refund when paying it. In 2024, the rate for credit interest is 2%.

After receiving a money order, you can act in two different ways:

A. You can still submit your account number in MyTax. The tax refund is already on its way to the bank where you can cash the money order. If you do not cash the money order in 28 days, the bank returns the uncashed amount to the Tax Administration. The time limit is counted from the date of the money order. After the time limit has expired, the tax refund will be paid to your bank account within about a week.

If the Tax Administration has paid a few cents or euros to your bank account, the amount consists of such overpayments or tax refunds from previous years that have been too small to be refunded as such. Small amounts may be paid to taxpayers who will receive a tax refund based on this year's tax decision.

The actual tax refunds are normally paid on the tax refund days from July to December. You can check the amount and date of payment of your tax refund in your tax decision and in MyTax.

So the small amount paid to you is not an error, and it does not require any action from you.

No. You cannot transfer your refund to your spouse, i.e. you cannot settle your spouse’s back taxes with an amount that will be refunded to you.

Yes. If you or your spouse make changes to your tax returns, the tax assessment process takes longer and the refund date is postponed. In these circumstances, you will get a new, revised tax decision. The revised decision will include your new refund date. All tax refunds will be paid in December at the latest.

Your refund can be used to settle any taxes you are accountable for. The amount of unpaid taxes will therefore be subtracted from your refund amount.
